The Rhythm Riders Ensemble is a fusion group that combines traditional North and South Indian instruments and concepts, with flashes of improvisations that stretch the boundaries of the ancient style of music.

Senthuran Jogaratnam

Tabla & Mridangam

With over 20 years of experience in Indian classical percussion, Senthuran is recognised as a leading Mridangam and Tabla artist. He began his Mridangam training under Sri Balasri Rasiah, before undertaking advanced training from Mridangam maestros Sri T.R Sundaresean and Sri Patri Satish Kumar. To gain a multifaceted understanding of Indian percussion, Senthuran also commenced Tabla training under Ashok Chavali Ji.

Beyond Mridangam and Tabla, Senthuran proficiently applies his rhythmic skills to instruments like the Morsing and Pakhawaj, which he frequently incorporates into his performances.

Senthuran is renowned for his sense of application, imaginative rhythmic patterns, flawless techniques, such as the gumki technique, and a unique style which showcases the beauty of applying elements of various percussion instruments in his performances. Senthuran has accompanied countless music and dance performances for various styles such as Carnatic, Hindustani, Bharatha Natyam, Kathak, Odissi, Jazz and World Fusion. Aside from this, Senthuran also regularly performs tabla for professional Indian playback concerts including Super Singers on their Australian tours.

Senthuran uses his years of learning and experience to train the next generation of Mridangamists and Tabla performers at Rhythm Riders Adacemy in an inclusive, creative and encouraging environment.

Aswin Selvanathan

Ghatam & Mridangam

Aswin commenced his Mridangam training under the tutelage of Sri Balasri Rasiah before receiving advanced training from Kalaimamani T.R. Sundaresan.

Aside from mridangam, Aswin has been able to utilise his mridangam abilities and apply it to the Ghatam with the guidance from his guru. He has been a regular on the Melbourne Carnatic music scene since 2012 and is known for the clarity in each stroke he plays. Aswin completed his arangetram in concert with leading vocalist Sri Sandeep Narayan in 2015.

Alongside his carnatic music endavours, he is currently pursing a career in music production, blending his expertise in both western and carnatic artforms.

 

Kasthuri Sahathevan

Veena

Kasthuri's family is devoted to the traditions of Carnatic music performance. Her mother Smt Sivaganga OAM has exposed her to finer nuances of both vocal and veena from a very young age. With devoted training under her mentor Smt Prabhavathi Ganesan she completed her veena arangetram in 2015.

She has completed her teacher’s diploma in vocal and veena under the auspices of the Australian Carnatic Music Society. She has also been playing veena for many dance institutions around Australia and also performed for Apsaras Arts Dance Company at the Madras Music Academy in 2019 during the Margazhi season

Kasthuri has completed Grade 6 piano (AMEB) and has graduated from the Australian Girls Choir in 2019. During her Australian Girls Choir trainings, she had the opportunity to travel around Europe and America for performances and workshops. Furthermore, she has performed with Hugh Jackman at Rod Laver Arena during his tour in 2019.

 

Devinya Kugathas

Vocal & Violin

Devinya Kugathas has been a student of Sri. Ahilan Sivanandan at the Geethanjalie School of Carnatic Music for over 15 years. Under his expert guidance, she has honed her skills as a Carnatic vocalist, becoming a regular performer at classical Carnatic concerts and bharatanatyam concerts around Melbourne.

Devinya's love for music extends beyond vocal performances, as she has also delved into the intricacies of the violin, learning under the guidance of Sri Murali Kumar at Raaga Sudha School of Carnatic Music. She completed her violin arangetram in 2019, marking a significant milestone in her musical journey.

Her love for music continues to be a significant part of her life, and she aspires to continue pursuing it alongside her career.

 

Kanus Mukunthas

Keyboard

Kanus Mukunthas is an emerging musician who has undergone training in both Classical and Carnatic Music. At the heart of Kanus's journey is the keyboard, an instrument that he has been mastering for several years. He has had the opportunity to perform in numerous concerts and projects, accompanying a wide range of local and international artists.

He is a sought-after collaborator who has the desire of showcasing the adaptability of the keyboard in creating a unique layer and providing greater depth to different compositions. Kanus is also a talented percussionist, having completed his mirdangam arangetram in 2016.

 

Navshil Singh

Pakhawaj, Dholak & Tabla

Navshil is a disciple of Sri Senthuran Jogaratnam at the Rhythm Riders Academy.

With over 7 years of experience, Navshil regularly accompanies for Hindustani classical music schools and Carnatic music schools. To further his professional training, Navshil has begun training to accompany for Kathak performances.

In addition to the Tabla, he is also a prominent Pakhawaj and Dholak performer, to which he has utilised his Tabla skills to enhance his execution and precision when performing with these North Indian percussion instruments.

 

Sachin Sureshkumar

Kanjira, Konnokkol & Morsing

Sachin Sureshkumar is a dedicated disciple of Sri Senthuran Jogaratnam at the Rhythm Riders Academy. He has had the privilege of performing with numerous esteemed artists and frequently collaborates with music schools, accompanying them at concerts, festivals, and events.

Beyond his expertise in Mridangam, Sachin is also a distinguished performer of Kanjira, Morsing, and Konnokol. He skillfully applies the precision and technique honed through his Mridangam training to elevate his performances on these additional percussion instruments.
